Big Waves of Mavericks

Mavericks is a surfing location in northern California at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 ft (8 m) and top out at over 60 ft (18 m) about ½ a mile out from shore. When the waves are predicted, surfers from all over the globe come to Mavericks for a giant wave contest.
This piece represents this special place for surfers—the rocks, the waves, and the unique lay of the beach. With shells and sand from this famous beach; the wave and rocks are sculpted in clay and coated in colored resin to achieve the realistic look of the ocean on an actual surfboard. Displayed on a specially crafted pine stand which is 15.6 in wide.
